Why?

I downloaded a rappers mixtape today, it’s been promoted for months online and I was slightly excited about it because a some people with opinions I value spoke highly of the project. My boy Markus and I made it about half way thru the tape when it became blatantly clear that this artist has been on a heavy diet of Lupe, Jay-Z, Drake, and Kanye.  Now, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with any of these artists, I actually like all of them at times… But there is something wrong with creating music that is blatant conglomeration of each of them.  I feel bad for the guy, because he put in a bunch of work promoting and creating something that has basically already been done.  Surely, new music will always have similarities and influences drawn from other artists and compositions, but it’s not a good look when you’d swear that the intro and beginning lines to a verse IS actually another artist.  I promise you we thought Lupe was on the track… 

When are we going to make a real effort to be ourselves in our music and treat the craft with more respect.  At least when people tell me I remind them of someone, it’s usually a particular artist whom I have only heard like one song from in my life… and that’s only because my friend DJ SuperDre loves it and plays often. 

Ok, that’s all for now.. No I am not going to call out the name of the mixtape’s creator yet, still haven’t decided if I should write a song about it.  5ive it

Dreams?

Two nights ago my Dad popped up in my dreams again…. I usually love it when this happens, and I actually am greatful that it happened..it was crazy, we had what seemed like a pretty long conversation and I was able to ask him some questions and get some advice.  Now I’ve gotta determine if it was him or just my subconsious…  Anyway, usually I have a great day following a night of these dreams but this time that wasn’t the case…  It’s surely selfish, but I was heated that I had to wait for a dream to speak to him

In the dream, I told him I’d really like him to come see a show.. He said he couldn’t do that..
